Tips From the Pumpkin Derby Racing Pros

  • Be sure to read the Official Rules carefully before you start constructing your Racer. It’s important to understand how to build a “legal” Pumpkin Racer. There are only a few simple rules to follow, after that it’s your imagination running wild.
  • A bigger or heavier Pumpkin Derby Racer is not a faster Pumpkin Derby Racer. Rarely does the biggest win. And all pumpkin racers must be lighter than 20 pounds. They will be weighed.
  • The best way to build a fast Pumpkin Derby Racer is to make sure the axles are parallel so it will roll straight down the track. Many racers are eliminated because they veer off the course before they cross the finish line. Check to make sure they are parallel before every race.
  • Make sure all of your wheels spin freely! We recommend using at least 2.5” wheels. If your wheels are too small your Racer will not get very far.
  • Have fun making your Racer. Pick a theme and be creative. Often, the crowd favorites are the most creative entries.
  • Wheels and axles can be purchased at your local hardware store or recycled from castaways found in your garage or a local thrift store.
